I&I Quetta, MCC Quetta advised to devise effective anti-smuggling strategy

KARACHI: The Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation FBr has advised Director I&I Quetta and Collector MCC Quetta to devise effective anti-smuggling operations to further enhance anti-smuggling performance in the region.

I&I Quetta initiated investigations the affairs of Custom house Taftan and detected serious anomalies. The most important thing, which came to the light is that ‘carbon’ is assessed at $280/ton at Appraisement South. While the same product is being cleared in the name of rubber processed oil at $120/ton. SN-500 vase is assessed at $900 per ton in Appraisement South while the same product is being cleared at $450 per ton at Taftan.

Another mega scam is also being investigated that certain chemicals namely methanol, naphtha oil and solvent oil are being imported from Iran and cleared from Custom House Taftan through mis-declaration of classification and weight. These chemicals are then supplied to entire Punjab.

I&I initiated the investigations and inquiries on the information of DG I&I Lutfullah Virk that large-scale revenue leakage was being carried out at Custom House Taftan.

These investigations are being carried out by Director I&I Quetta Iqbal Bhawana and Deputy Director Inamullah Wazir.

It may be mentioned here that DG I&I is short of human resource to cover sensitive regions such as Balochistan.

The Directorate General also evaluated the performance of Director I&I Quetta and MCC Quetta during April-November 2014.

According to the performance evaluation, Director I&I Quetta foiled numerous smuggling bids and seized goods worth Rs223.026 million while MCC Quetta during April-November 2014 seized smuggled goods worth Rs184.737 million.

I&I confiscated 105 vehicles worth Rs135 million, cloth worth Rs2.245 million, tea Rs1.3 million, auto spare parts worth Rs14.83 million, petroleum products of Rs35.4 million and many other products including cigarette, gutka, electronic goods etc.

Similarly, MCC Quetta confiscated 151 vehicles, cloth worth Rs0.343 million, tea Rs17.051 million, petroleum products of Rs87.76 million and many other products including cigarette, medicines, electronic goods etc.

The Directorate General noted that there has been no joint case and recommended that a joint meeting could be conducted between Director I&I Quetta and Collector MCC Quetta to devise effective anti-smuggling operations to further enhance anti-smuggling performance in the region.
